FROM SCRATCH is a New Zealand group with an international reputation for innovation and an energetic, compelling style of music and sound performance. From Scratch is regarded as one of New Zealand's most innovative experimental music ensembles. By combining striking sculptural instruments with complex and original rhythmic compositions, they have created a unique and adventurous style merging music, visual art, and performance.

They have performed since 1974 with an ever-changing lineup, though principally led by Philip Dadson and with roots going back to the London Scratch Orchestra.

Invention is central to the group’s evolution and while From Scratch has established a Pacific-based identity with its characteristic percussion, it is constantly surprising audiences and critics alike with its unique brand of magic.

Custom-built instruments made from industrial and natural materials are combined with found objects and low-tech electronics, creating an evocative theatre of natural and urban sounds and rhythms.
